Storyline

The Night Watch by William Herbert Dunton (Illustrator of 1921 edition of Riders of the Purple Sage), c. 1918

Riders of the Purple Sage is a story about Jane Withersteen (a woman who inherits a huge ranch in a remote Mormon community); Tull (a strict polygamist who wants to marry the woman against her wishes); and Bishop Dyer (the Mormon leader who wants to assure the ranch stays under control of a member of his faith.) Into this struggle rides Jim Lassiter, a gunman looking for his sister who was kidnapped by Mormons.  One of Jane's friends is a gentile (non-Mormon) named Bern Venters who is driven from the community into the arms of Bess, a young outlaw. By the end of the story, Bern and Bess resolve the stormy issues surrounding their relationship, Lassiter learns the fate of his sister; and Jane finds new love after fleeing a fiery inferno. Bullets fly and and the bad guys meet a thundering end... at least until Grey publishes the novel's sequel, The Rainbow Trail.
