Variants of the First Editions:
Sunset Pass

The following information was generously provided by Mark Hagner of Texas and confirmed by Dr. Joe Wheeler.

A variant has been observed on this title. K-F is the accepted first edition of this title. However several copies of this book with the codes A-F have been observed, which would indicate an earlier printing date. The belief is that this was an advanced printing of limited numbers, and errors that showed up in this advance copy were corrected for the later printing. While this variant would be considered very collectible, several copies have been observed and there is a question about the added value for the A-F edition. The information below has generously been provided by Mark Hagner of Texas and confirmed by Dr. Joe Wheeler.

Details on Variants of Sunset Pass:

  • A-F printing has one identified binding color, brown binding with blue stamped lettering. K-F edition has three identified binding color variations; that being brown, dark brown, and orange.

  • The brown cloth binding of the A-F printing has a surface that is harder and smoother than any of the K-F bindings.

  • In the A-F copy I have (and the one the complier used for the comparison) the words "First Edition" are absent on the copyright page above the code letters. The proper amount of space exists, but the words are absent. There is some sort of line showing but no words (I can scan the CR page if someone would like to see it).

  • The A-F code letter size is uniform but leans/cocked to the right, slightly less than vertical. The K-F code letters are of different size/font and thus not uniform in size.

  • The A-F tapered rules at the head of chapter 1, pg. 1, are perfect and evenly inked. The same tapered rules at the head of chapter 1, pg. 1, in the K-F printing are unevenly inked, less definition.

  • In the A-F printing on pg. 263, line 7 from the bottom, the "c" in claimed is broken type.

  • Not all, but scattered copies of the K-F printing exhibit a perfect "c" in the same location.

  • In the A-F printing there is a broken "m" on pg. 339, line 2 from the bottom. The "A" in Alice is perfect. The same letters in the same location in the K-F printing indicate the same broken "m", however; the "A" in Alice in the K-F printing shows an almost non-existent left slant to the letter. This "A" condition was noted in all three K-F bindings.

  • For the most part, the A-F printing has numerous instances of broken type where almost perfect type exists in all three K-F bindings. Examples of this to follow:

    1. A-F, broken "q" pg. 50, last line (Perfect "q" exists in K-F in same location).
    2. A-F, worn or over-inked "6" in page no. "60" (Perfect "6" exists in K-F in same location).
    3. A-F, broken "n" pg. 161, line 2 (Perfect "n" exists in K-F in same location).
    4. A-F, broken "ryi" in the word "trying", 2nd line from bottom of pg. 279 (Perfect "ryi" exists in K-F in same location).
    5. A-F, broken "h" in work "hombre", pg. 293, 2nd line from bottom (Perfect "h" exists in K-F in same location).
    6. A-F, broken "h" in word had, pg. 60, line 8 from the bottom (Same broken "h" exists in K-F in same location).

  • Character "Jess Slagle" pg. 63/67-70, becomes "Jem Slagle" pg. 179-180/pg. 299. (This error was notes in all copies). I have an A-F copy and one K-F copy, I verified all of the above exists. I am no expert but it seems logical to me that the pre-production A-F printing took place, after errors were corrected the K-F full production copy was printed.
