British Editions

The Zane Grey's West Society would like to express our appreciation to David Leeson of England for this listing.

This listing of UK editions is not guaranteed to be complete or all-inclusive but is based upon books that I have seen, bibliography found in the Book and Magazine Collector, references that I have looked up in the British Library and on assumptions made from information on the dust jackets and inside sheets of books that I own.

Reprints by Publisher - Hardback Copies

Hodder & Stoughton, London - this Company, who was Zane Grey's main publisher in the UK, reprinted all of the books that they had first published many times over the years until sometime in the 1950s or 1960s. I have been unable to establish the last date that hardback books were used for reprints.

During the 1920s many of these reprints had a yellow colour on the spine of the dust jacket and this seemed to develop into their famous gYellow Jacketh series which they than used until they stopped reprinting in hardback. This series was not specific to any one author or indeed to any particular type of novelist. They probably covered all popular authors that they had the contracts for publishing.

During the 1920s some of their reprints were very attractive. Whilst the dust jackets were quite ordinary, the books themselves had nice cloth covered boards with an impressed silhouette in the right hand top corner, some examples are listed below.

  The Man of the Forest
To the Last Man
The Wanderer of the Wasteland
Call of the Canyon
The Thundering Herd
Under the Tonto Rim
The Vanishing Indian
  Sun Setting behind Pine Trees
Sun Setting behind Pine Trees
Girl sitting on Burro led by a Man
Girl sitting on a rock
Large Bison
Man on Horse descending slope
Indian on Horse (at bottom of book)

They may have used these impressed silhouettes on the 1st editions of these books as the last book listed above is a first edition.

In addition to reprinting the books they had first published they also included in their reprints The Spirit of the Border and The Last Trail.

As far as I am aware they never reprinted the first 8 western stories: i.e. Heritage of the Desert to Wildfire. Although reprinting rights to these books were granted to other UK publishers.

Harper & Bros, London - They reprinted several times over the years the first eight western novels but as far as I am aware never reprinted any of the other novels.

Thos Nelson & Sons, London - Produced reprints starting around the 1920s of the following books and continued to do so until the 1940s and possibly into the 1950s.

  Heritage of the Desert
Riders of the Purple Sage
Desert Gold
The Light of Western Stars
The Lone Star Ranger
The Rainbow Trail
The Border Legion
Wildfire
Ken Ward in the Jungle
The Young Forester
The Young Lion Hunter

The early 1920s reprints are not very impressive books I believe they were produced and sold cheaply and the covers are dull blues, reds and greens which almost look dirty, with hand cut ragged edged pages. Later reprints were much smarter with machine cut pages. They are small in size, were probably designed to fit in the pocket and were undoubtedly popular. The early 1920s reprints are fairly easy to get hold of but without dust jackets.

Hamish Hamilton, London - Reprinted the following books from late 1940s to early 1950s. Spines of dust jackets were always white.

  The Heritage of the Desert
Riders of the Purple Sage
Desert Gold
The Light of Western Stars
The Lone Star Ranger
The Rainbow Trail
The Border Legion
Wildfire
Tappanfs Burro
Under the Tonto Rim
Nevada
The Shepherd of Guadaloupe
The Drift Fence
Robbersf Roost

Chivers Press, Bath - Reprinted the following books under the Firecrest label with quite vivid dust jackets.

  Riders of the Purple Sage
Desert Gold

  1988
1990

I have not been able to discover if they reprinted any other titles around this time.
