Channel-Port aux Basques

Channel-Port aux Basques is important as the first place Zane Grey’s foot touched ground as he arrived from Sydney, NS on the SS Caribou.  It was also the last ground he touches as he left the Rock on the same vessel over a month later.

The photo shown below was the image most discussed by our Newfoundland friends. It is from Daniel Zirilli’s Nova Scotia/Newfoundland Photo Album purchased from the Zane Grey Estate. The photo was generously colorized by the Rock's Gordon Rhymes. Many good folks from Newfoundland History Buffs spent hours nostalgically pointing out places their relatives had lived, the Anglican Church, streets and even an old fishing spot.  Sadly, they also noted, some tearfully, that much of the bay has now been filled to accommodate development.

Zane Grey, R.C. and Captain Mitchell faced a decision when they landed.  Romer and George Takahashi were still in route and their launch had not yet arrived.  They decided to head north to briefly visit the famed salmon fishing rivers of the Conroy River Valley.
