Agnes Moulton docked at Burnt Islands

After returning from the Codroy River Valley, Grey's party met the Ondina and travelled east to Burnt Islands to fish while they waited for Romer and George Takahashi to arrive.  The ship to the left is the Agnes Moulton which was at the island while they were there.  The ship carried goods to the Moulton stores along the coast, perhaps even smuggling rum at times. While in Burnt Islands, a man named John Thorne helped the fisherman find prime fishing waters.

R.C. Grey described Burnt Islands, “Burnt Island Village was a small edition of Port-aux-Basques, more barren because of its size, and extremely primitive.  Fisherman’s shacks line the shore, isolated cottages clung to the hills, and high and centrally located was an imposing church which dominated the scene.” More than Burnt Islands itself, it was the local river that impressed Zane Grey's brother. “It was a happy crowd that tramped downstream [with} several fine salmon, the largest 15 pound, and many grilse. [Grilse are young salmon just returned from the sea weighing two to six pounds] We sailed from Burnt Island with genuine regret. Who likes to leave a river full of fish even when one is given promise of equal or better luck elsewhere?" The fishing was so good that the group stopped at Burnt Islands once again after picking up Romer and George so they could enjoy a fun angling experience.

(R.C. Grey referred to Burnt Islands and Burnt "Island" in his Outdoor Life article)

This is the beautiful river near Burnt Island that impressed R.C. Grey.
