Introduction

The purpose of this document is to create a chronological listing of the printed writings of Zane Grey and to create a sequential accounting of the various editions of his work as published by the original publishers. This includes a discussion of the many printing variants of many of the titles.

It appears that in many cases, original publisher sheets were transferred to new publishers with reprints rights and were used in new casings indicating the new publisher. Here these are referred to as gTransition Casingsh and the new publisher is typically indicated on spine of book and the title page lists original publisher. (The two exceptions to this are The Last of the Plainsmen and Tales of Swordfish and Tuna, which has the original publisher on spine and new publisher on title page (McClurg and Hodder respectively). It also appears that the original publisher sheets were sent to the U.K. and utilized in editions there (by Harpers and Hodder). Here these are classified as gForeign editions with American Sheetsh. Both of these occurrences are listed in the chronological listing of the titles as well as their own separate grouping.

It also appears that when reprint rights were transferred to new publishers, the plates were transferred as well. This listing indicates published works of other publishers where code letters have been used. The number of Grosset & Dunlap editions that have code letters but no corresponding Harper edition suggests that Grosset may have been modifying the code letters. I have also listed additional publishers for many titles. These have not been done in any comprehensive way and do not include the normal Walter Black editions, Colliers editions or McKinley editions, unless these displayed code letters.

This checklist has been compiled from my own collection, observations of other Zane Grey collections as well as internet observations. The five following reference books have extensively used as well as information from the ZGWS website:

Zane Grey First Editions, An Analytic Compendium of Determinative Points, by Lloyd Rogers, Portals Press, 1986.

An Annotated Zane Grey Checklist by G.M. Farley, Amereon House, Mattituck 1988.

Zane Grey: A Book Checklist, G.M. Farley. Leaves of Autumn Books, Inc, Payson, AZ (1996)

A Bibliographical Check List and Price Guide for the Writings of R.C. Grey, Romer Grey and Zane Grey, Country Lane Books

Author Price Guides (for Zane Grey), Patricia and Allen Ahearn

This research project continues as factual errors and omissions are sure to exist in this document.
